Description:
Preparing for the final year of the Dry Valley Drilling Project in Antarctica, 34 scientists from the United States, Japan, and New Zealand gathered May 29-31 in Seattle. There they reported preliminary results from work in previous years and fixed drill sites for the last drilling year, 1974-75. Reports and discussions served to define the goals and rationale for various drill sites, including McMurdo Sound, eastern Taylor Valley, and New Habor, Ross Island and the dry valley lakes, which are very sensitive indicators of paleoclimate. It was strongly emphasized that all future drill holes should penetrate the permafrost boundary and be left cased for long term measurements. The sequence of sites to be drilled was established.
