Description: 
To resolve the question of salt concentrations and water movement in permafrost, three boreholes were drilled in Taylor Valley: at New Harbor 2.5km west of the shoreline and 16.1km from the coast. In the first two boreholes marine and terrestrial sediment are observed down to an unconformity below which all sediment is marine. In the last borehole no marine sediment was identified. At New Harbor six lenses of pore ice having salinity less than sea water alternate with layers having pore ice salinities greater than sea water. The second borehole has pore ice less saline than sea water to depth 110m below sea level. This third borehole encountered increasingly saline pore ice from the surface to the crystalline basement.
