Description:
Considerable amounts of nitrate and iodate in rock samples obtained in the ice-free Victoria Valley 30 miles west of McMurdo Sound are reported. No suitable explanation has yet been made for the existence of the nitrate. The occurrence of iodine in an oxidized form can be explained on thermodynamic grounds.
