Description:
The glacial history of Wright Valley is reviewed based on field work during the 1967-1968 and 1968-1969 austral summer seasons, relating the axial glacial invasions from the inland ice of east Antarctica at the west end of the valley and from the area now occupied by the Ross Sea at the east, with variations of the alpine glaciers that now descend towards the valley floor from neve fields in the mountain ranges to the north and south. The sequence of events initiated by alpine glaciation following uplift of the Transantarctic Mountains during the Tertiary are described, the glacial chronology being based on the geometric relationships among the deposits of the axial and the alpine glaciers.
