New mineral discovered in Antarctica (antarcticite)
A new mineral was discovered at the end of December 1963, in the area of exposed rocks in water of Don Juan Pond, Wright Valley. Studies on the optical properties and X-ray refraction of the white crystals indicate a structure of CaC126H2O. The mineral was named antarcticite. [See geochemistry for additional papers].
